Perhaps my biggest complaint with John Jakes' North and South book series is the overwhelming number of characters that inhabit his novels. I found myself laboring to read this 2nd book in this classic American Civil War trilogy series. In the mid's, I was hooked on the television adaptation versions of Jakes' characters. The fire in the tobacco barn was starting to rage, and inside was the most wanted man in America: John Wilkes Booth, the traitor who had shot President Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theatre 12 days earlier. Nursing a broken leg, Booth had made it 73 miles to Port Royal, Virginia, with federal troops in pursuit. She is captured by rebels but saved by a Southern gentleman from rape and worse. They also fall in love and are separated by the war. Throughout the tale lurks the dangerous presence of John Wilkes Booth and his outspoken hatred of Abe Lincoln, until the fateful night of Ap.
